This series consists of correspondence, clippings, diagrams, and other material pertaining to urban development in Atlanta prior to the formation of Central Atlanta Progress, Inc. (CAP) in 1967. The records document the construction of viaducts and bridges in downtown Atlanta in the 1920s and 1930s including correspondence to and form Nashville, Chattanooga, and St. Louis Railway officials regarding the Central Avenue and Pryor Street viaducts. Railroad officials were also instrumental in the organization for business and civic improvements in the central city. The Central Marietta Street Association was formed in 1929 to promote business along Marietta Street between Spring Street and Peachtree Street. The records of this organization pertain to the viaducts and include a proposal to develop a plaza park over the railroad between Spring and Courtland streets. The series also contains correspondence from 1947 of Greater Atlanta for Annexation, Inc. concerning the annexation of Buckhead and Cascade Heights. A small amount of correspondence written in 1952 from the Central Atlanta Improvement Association, one of CAPs predecessor organizations, is also included in the series.
